Nutritional background of creatine

Creatine is an energy storage molecule involved in the resynthesis of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Creatine is a naturally occurring substance produced in the liver from the three amino acids glycine, arginine, and methionine. Methionine is essential for the body and must be obtained through daily food intake. In addition to its own production, the body also obtains some creatine from food. However, to ingest, for example, 5 g of creatine, one would have to consume approximately 1.1 kg of red meat. Creatine is converted to creatine phosphate (CP) and stored in the muscles. CP increases the level of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Due to its beneficial properties, creatine monohydrate enhances physical performance during short-duration, high-intensity exercise.
